Lovely work, very nice expression! You should clean it and contrast it a little IMO. Good drawing!

Wow! I love this one Amanda, scanner might be the problem, but I've found even with good scanners levels need to be adjusted in an imaging program. Top marks!

 08/17/05 @696

I don't think it's a scanner problem. I personally just mess with the image>adjustments>levels. Just play with the 3 arrows a little, and I'm positive you'll get your darks darker, and possibly your lights lighter. =) Great work.

no real critiques on this, nothing that cant be fixed with playing around a bit with contrast and levels and maybe cleaning a bit the white parts of the image

Very beautiful portrait. I like the way you have done the edges.
All my pencil drawings come out bad on my scanner so I have to enhance the contrast etc slightly in photoshop.

Fantastic shading overall and love the eyes and lips. Very pretty and my favorite of your works.
If you cannont get Photoshop right away you can try a free graphics program that will let you manipulate the levels,hue/saturation and so on. Here is one you can check out http://www.irfanview.com/
Also the software with your scanner could be able to do some adjustments too.
Good luck.

This drawing is exquisite - actually, jen turned me on to your portfolio and I love your work. The texture of your line work in this drawing and the negative space add so much for me.

I agree with BioWorkZ - that you could simply adjust the levels in PhotoShop, but I'd suggest the following procedure (rather than randomly adjusting the sliders for black, mid-grey and white):

Move the far right slider toward the left axis and the image will become less and less recognizable - this is ok. Once you can barely see the image anymore, click the black (left) eyedropper and click the last discernible area of black nearest to the focal point of the image. If you are not satisfied with the selection, re-click until the black reference looks good.

This will recalibrate your black reference so that that pixel will become true black and every other pixel will be adjusted accordingly. To adjust the white reference, you can manually move the right slider along the axis or you can move the left slider toward the right and once the image becomes indiscernibly dark, click the white eyedropper and select the last area closest to white near the focal point of the image.

Once you are satisfied with the black and white references, you can move the middle slider to the left to increase contrast or right to reduce contrast between the black and white.

Hope this helps!

Awesome pencil work!
As far as the scanner goes I think it has to do with the fact that scanners send light pulses and catch the return off the surface of the image. So whatever you capture is like sitting in a dark room looking at your sketch with two flashlights taped next to your eyes, both of them pointing at the sketch.
